A Ceasefire is just a “pipe dream”
The Editorial Board of the Binghamton Pipe Dream would like you to believe a ceasefire is part of the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I am here to tell you that, as of right now, that is not the case.
The effectiveness and longevity of a ceasefire depend on numerous factors, and while in other situations they might have worked, drawing parallels when the limitations differ between the two is a naive and harmful journalistic tactic. A tactic only employed by news media with a bias and clear objective while wearing a false pacifistic facade.
So why won't a ceasefire or call for it be the solution we have prayed for?
Well, to begin, it is impossible to take the word of an internationally-recognized terrorist group that commits thousands of attacks, rapes, and murders in a country and continuously calls for the annihilation and extinction of my people. Additionally, there is a history of agreements and ceasefires disregarded and broken by Hamas. Calling for a ceasefire that existed and was violated by the group you uplift is a futile and foolish method of peace pursuit.
A call for a ceasefire in this conflict is akin to placing a used bandaid on a deep bullet wound. You are attempting a method that has proven not to work multiple times in the past and only acts as a mocking of the pain and suffering undergone by the Israeli and Palestinian people. Individuals with an ounce of critical thinking can understand that this issue is not one of territory but of terrorism. This war is not between two countries; it is between Israel and Hamas- a group that does not represent the peaceful Palestinians, steals their humanitarian aid, offers money as payment for committing an act of terror and murder, and kills Jews and Israelis as an act of serving their god. They enable the international spread of antisemitism and islamophobia and are praised or left out of the conversation by the same people calling for a ceasefire.
The plight of the Palestinians and Israelis is one not easily understood by an individual or group who sources their information and writes in such a way that one group is villinized while the other is celebrated. Following a pattern of tunnel vision, and keeping an editorial board’s voice without diverse opinions is not the sign of a respectable journal. The fact that there is no mention of the consistent terrorism and threats of annihilation by Hamas to Jews, or how Hamas broke multiple ceasefires, is undeniable proof.
Shame on Pipe Dream for pushing false narratives and harmful rhetoric yet again. It's not surprising, but boy, is it disappointing.
